The Blueprint for Awakening | The Great Alaskan Awakening

Main Passage: Nehemiah 13:1–31

  1. Introduction
    1. Review of our series
    2. Nehemiah gives us a blueprint for
      national awakening
  2. A Look at the Context of Nehemiah
    1. Jeremiah prophesied that Israel would go into captivity in Babylon for 70 years (606–536 BC) and would then return to Jerusalem (Jer. 29:10–14).
      1. After 70 years of captivity, God sent
Israel back to Jerusalem to rebuild the
        city and the temple.
      2. Zerubbabel and Nehemiah’s reforms were built around a corporate worship center in the temple.
    2. After Nehemiah finished building the walls (445 BC) — in just 52 days —
    3. They emphasized four specific commands in this national covenant (Neh. 9:38–13:3). Why?
    4. The signing of the covenant ended with
      a national celebration.
  1. A Look at the Text
    1. Nehemiah returns and confronts the people
      in four areas:

      1. They promised not to marry ________________, to uphold godly standards in family life
        (Neh. 10:30).
      2. They covenanted to keep the ________________, honoring “sacred time” with God (Neh. 10:31; 13:15–22).
      3. They committed to ________________, to support worship in the temple (Neh. 10:32–39; 13:10–14).
      4. They committed not to have ________________ or significant partnerships with unbelievers (Neh. 13:1–9).
  2. God is Speaking to Us
    1. God longs for His people to live the abundant life.
    2. Commit to obeying these four commands —
      the blueprint:

      1. Don’t marry ________________; uphold godly standards in family life (2 Corinthians 6:14).
      2. Keep the ________________ (Hebrews 4:9–10).
      3. Be committed to tithing and ________________
        (1 Corinthians 9:13–14).
      4. Be committed not to have ungodly ________________.
    3. Be a person of prayer.
    4. Be a leader and lead.
  3. Conclusion
